Why was the work made?
The work was made to represent the feeling of change, simplicity and describe a more steady lifestyle.
Can you describe your intentions, inspirations or motivations behind making this work?
My inspiration definitely came from the Covid-19 crisis and the restrictions put in place such as confinement. I wanted to represent the feeling of settlement, how and what it took to settle for this new “normal.
Is there a broader social, political, cultural or personal context that you are exploring or responding to?
Political and social – Covid-19/ Confinement
Personal: What has become my everyday life. The idea of settling for the new “normal”. That is so different from the world we used to know.
What is the work about?
My work is about everything that we are used to seeing every day since the beginning of last year. The new life we are starting to get used to.
Does your work explore themes, ideas, or something else?
I think the main theme would be “comfort”. I do not know if it makes sense or not, but basically getting used to everything, we found our little safe places and activities to get through every day.
How do you want your audience to feel or react?
I would like my audience to be able to relate somehow to my images, whether if they can find comfort or easiness.
Why is your voice the best one to transmit this information?
I do not know if my voice is the best or not to tell this, but I used to hate change, and in my life I have moved many times. I had to adapt to new situations and new things often through the years and covid has been the hardest one to adjust to. I had to move often when I was young and my parents were separated. I moved three times before high school (changed school only once in elementary school) and I was always trying my hardest to see the positive. I did the same thing when covid got here. I did not get to finish high school normally, I did not get graduation nor a prom. I started college from home and I have heard the biggest fights around me between people I love. It was so hard to find the positive in all of this, but I created a little bubble where everything was okay. I had my music, my camera, nature, and people that I love around me. Now we have to wear masks everywhere and literally live in our bubbles without gathering. We had to settle in our universe and make it work. I did my best to represent this and hopefully, I did a good job at it.
How does this work relate to broader themes in relation to art and photography?
I used many mediums to create these photographs. Some of the images in my series have been shot digitally, others with my film camera. Some of them have even been taken with my cellphone. I managed the lighting pretty well in all of them to get the specific calm and settling mood.
Does it challenge existing understandings, theories or ideas
I think it does, I wanted my title to be settle because like I explained a few times, we had to settle to this new reality. Not forever, but it has already been a year and it is still quite complicated. We have to make it as good as we can and try to find places where we feel comfortable and “free”.
MAKE A DRAFT
Settled
I really had no idea of what my plan was for my series. I had a lot of options and ideas but I chose the theme: Settle. The reason why I chose this theme is the following: It is this is exactly what we had to do in the past year. Our vision of what is “normal” completely changed and we had to adapt to a lot of changes due to the covid-19 crisis.
I used to hate change, and in my life and I have moved many times throughout the years. I had to adapt to new situations and new things often through the years and covid has been the hardest one to adjust to. I had to move often when I was young and my parents were separated. I moved three times before high school (changed school only once in elementary school) and I was always trying my hardest to see the positive. I did the same thing when covid got here.
